The Maine Coon is a large domesticated, long-haired cat breed. It is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. The breed originated in the state of Maine, where it is the official state cat. This affectionate cat is nicknamed “America’s Cat” and sits at the top of friendliest cat breeds. Other friendly feline breeds include: Siamese, Ragdoll, Abyssinian, Birman, and Sphynx.
Are Maine Coons a Good Family Breed?
According to PetMD, these friendly felines are highly intelligent, sweet-natured and gentle. They are muscular and have a thick double coat of long hair. “They thrive in families with children and other pets, even dogs. Additionally, they are known to be very tolerant and can easily adapt to the needs of children.”
These phenomenal felines are sociable, energetic, playful, and athletic. They love the outdoors and needs lots of exercise; however, it’s not safe for cats to roam alone. Therefore, “owners should ensure they spend more time giving their cat an outlet for their natural behaviors. This need should be considered before taking on a Maine Coon.”
